Lately, the buzz around used 944's has reached a fever pitch, at least in the circles I follow, so I want to know, do you think now is the time to buy? Or will the 944 always be the cheap Porsche?

From what I've seen, prices on good, unmolested, lower-mileage 944 turbos are going up. A little. There's a wide range though. Not really what I'd call an investment car though.

Non-turbos, eh, I'd say more that prices are remaining stable.

They'll never reach 911 monies; 944 turbos will go up in value, as will the S2. regular 944s with 2.5L engines will stay low. But I mean, I don't forsee any jump in price for awhile if at all. They're low to the point where an average high school student could buy one over a used sn-95 Mustang.

I've seen them around SA 3-6 grand running for the past few years. If they're going to go up it hasn't happened around here yet. They're 30 year old entry Porsches, how expensive could they get, right?

...right?

I've been looking at them for the last month throughout our state. They are still a bargain and cheap in running condition. Though, a lot of really nice ones are popping up. Might be why it seems like they going up. Especially Turbo

I think—like many cars made in relatively low numbers—prices will continue to go up for nice examples with the right spec—Turbo, etc. (I'm not Porsche expert.) Some of the 944 I see around though are really, really rough, and I have a hard time believing they'll ever be worthy investments. With Porsches in particular, originality and condition matter a lot.

Every Porsche is going to go up in value. As the prices for the more desirable models reach heights where most people cannot afford them the demand shifts for the previously less desirable models and suddenly prices start rising for those too. It sucks, huge. Car prices suffer from extremely accelerated inflation due to that. Look how fast E30 M3's rose in price.

On a scale from 70's Jaguar to Honda Civic, how reliable are 2.5 944's? Just in case I ever find one down here I can't live without. Not in the market, but for future reference.

It's an interference engine. If you do not replace the timing belt and water pump in the correct intervals, you've got yourself a messed up motor with bent valves and a hefty bill to pay to fix it. Most of the work you can do DIY if you're mechanically inclined to do so. There are plenty of forums to pick up advice from. I recommend checking out Rennlist and Pelican Parts and finding some guides and advice. They all have years of experience there and some noobs that can help you out better than I.

But honestly, as long as you keep up with maintenance, these cars are very reliable. So I guess leaning closer to Civic but still in the middle.

Here are some great buyer's guides:

So basically, if you have room, buy a parts car to go along with it?

I was wondering the same thing

I just realized Wikipedia lists the production figures:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_9…

That's a lot of cars!

And look how many 911 3.2 cars were made:

Total production of the 911 3.2 Carrera series was 76,473 cars (35,670 coupé, 19,987 cabrio, 18,468 targa).

You can if you want to; it's not necessary, but I imagine it would help significantly. My point is if you've got the cash to buy the car and maintain it yourself or through mechanics(which will cost you $$$$), then by all means, get one and enjoy ze ride! :)

As of right now, I don't, but I would eventually like a car of German decent. I want to explore the unreliable side of the spectrum.

Kinja'd!!!0

None right now. Comparatively speaking(with the exception of head gaskets every 100k to 150k miles) I am pretty high on the reliability scale. Anything German will be unreliable comparatively. Within a year or so, maybe $5k on another project. That will be a internal battle between that or a FJ6?. Basically, I am asking how bad of an idea would daily driving a 944 be?

I'm planning on daily driving mine; year round through Michigan potholes and snow. I have no answer for that yet, but I imagine it to be akin to a driving an older ver. of the Toyobaru twins, so to speak; and take that however you will. There are plenty of people online in forums that daily their cars. Even regular 924s!

Also, because reliability appears to be of no issue, what about this? Hehehe.

The thing with the 944, is you can buy a really good one for less than 5k. A 928, hahahahaha! I wouldn't even attempt that. On a side note, aren't regular 924's pretty reliable because they are simple VW engines?

924s have Audi engines out of some VW van or something...

If I had 6k I know what I would be doing tomorrow . Or even 2500 http://pensacola.craigslist.org/cto/4569033159… . It is raining 944's down here all of a sudden and I'm broke. Search the Pensacola craigslist. There is an S2 with less than 7k miles.

Kinja'd!!!0

WHY DO I HAVE TO BE BROKE! There are a few CP's in there though. Like the guy trying to sell the shell for 3500. Then there is someone selling a 928 shell that appears to either be a. burnt or b. covered in tar, for 350. I don't know if that would be considered a NPOCP.

Unless brown is a one off color on a 944, I'm pretty sure 7500 is a CP with 175k miles. It's either decent prices for good cars or cars in shit shape for the same price. Then there are the proud ones.

sweet! I used to go to Austin pretty much every friday night after work when i lived in San Antonio (band). I went to HCC for a year then to UHD. Finally finished while in SA at St Philips. Not sure how an associates degree in applied science has to do with selling parts but oh well lol

Good luck in all your future ventures!

A lot of guys end up going nuts collecting old parts cars, then 10 years later you see them all on craigslist as a bundle deal.... Personally, I don't think it's necessary to have a parts car because you can purchase new parts for decent prices online and you don't have that worry that the replacement part is potentially just as bad as the part you just took out.

Additionally, Unless you live in the country and having parts cars is an acceptable thing, I'd be concerned about what a parts car could do to your attractiveness to the opposite sex....
